Target audience

These activities of good practices are addressed to structure who want to propose digital workshop for their beneficiaries. Such as: municipality, an association, a structure or a citizen involved in local activities, in contact with people aged 60 and over.

Objective

Cybernadette is an opportunity for seniors, parents or grandparents, to familiarize themselves with “cyberspace”, i.e. the Internet, online procedures, but also the digital tools and applications of everyday life.

This is an initiative of “Media-cité” which, by offering free and friendly workshops on digital tools and uses to people over 60, aims to work towards the digital inclusion of seniors.

Location /geographical coverage

The “Cybernadette” project was created by Media-Cité, an organisation working on social innovation and digital technology in Bordeaux. The digital workshops for seniors can be spread throughout the region according to demand.

Introduction

13% of French people say they never go online, 66% of them are over 65. To tackle this problem, there are digital support centres in the regions, but…
– They are sometimes poorly identified by seniors
– The offers are not really aimed at them but rather concern prevention actions for young people; this leaves few opportunities for seniors to take advantage of modern technologies.

With the digitalisation of our society, there is a risk of digital insecurity. The age factor is discriminating. It is (along with the level of education, income, and rurality) one of the factors that most strongly influence the digital autonomy of people. The senior public is thus very exposed to digital exclusion. As for those who are “connected”, there is a need for preventive information to avoid potential risks and to control the information they publish about themselves and their family.

Partner(s) and Stakeholders

The project is addressed to municipality, association, structure or a citizen involved in local activities, in contact with people aged 60 and over.
Cybernadette offers a complete programme to help people over 60 to become more independent and to master digital tools.

The project helps the structure to:

  • Identifying the needs and expectations of the public in your area
  • Edit the workshop programme
  • Support for communication and registration
  • Provide of materials
  • Organize and facilitate the workshops
  • Evaluate

Methodological Approach

The workshops are free of charge, both for the host and for the public. They organise the implementation jointly with the host organization and then they run the workshop, bringing the necessary equipment (tablets, Wifi router, teaching aids)

It is collective workshops; 10 people for the practical workshops, 20 for the debate workshops, and last 1:30. The spirit of the workshops is “digital without the headaches and with snacks”. Indeed, each workshop is followed by a convivial moment around a glass of friendship, to extend the exchanges.

Cybernadette is an offer of actions adapted to seniors, to their rhythms, to their schedules, on the subjects which concern them, according to attractive formats of intervention, with clear and simple access supports, listening to their needs on the daily digital life and close to their home in places which they will be able to continue to frequent.

There are 3 different formats:

  • information-debate
  • demonstrations, tips (social networking, online music, photo sharing, Mooc workshops…)
  • Practical workshop (creating and managing emails, making a video call, using chat messages, administrative procedures, online subscriptions and payments, online appointment booking…)

And 5 different themes:

  • Internet
  • Communication
  • Daily life
  • Digital culture
  • Culture and entertainment

There is also a focus on raising awareness of security issues, use of personal data, misinformations…

Validation

The validation process is done at the end of each workshop proposed by an evaluation to be filled by participants.

Impact

This workshop offer activities adapted to seniors, to their pace, to their schedules, on the subjects that concern them, according to attractive formats, with clear and easy-to-access materials, attentive to their needs in terms of everyday digital life, and close to their homes in places they can continue to frequent.

It allows to:

  • To fight social isolation
  • To stimulate cognitives functions
  • To tackle digital exclusions

Innovation and Success Factors

This good practice contribute to an innovation in the livelihood of the erderly for many reasons and the key success factors are:

  • to adapt to people needs and to benefit from personalised support
  • to make the workshops user-friendly. Indeed, older people do not have the same patience with digital tools as the new generations
  • allow them to meet other people and create social links
  • stay active
  • to interrupt the daily routine

Constraints

Lessons learned

The advantages of this practice and of the cybernadette proposals is the free aspect, accessible to all, a complete offer, adapted according to the needs.

Sustainability

Cybernadette can easily be sustainable, indeed it has been stopped because of covid. The project needs to create local partners and a solid base for local deployment.

It needs a structured dissemination strategy because this service is accessible to all and co-funded by public ressources.

Replicability and/or up-scaling What are the possibilities of extending the good practice more widely?

This project could be deployed on a wider level. However, it needs a lot of resources to create such workshops. Replicability mean that it would need to provide human, technological and material resources to set up the workshops throughout the territory.

Conclusion

Participants are asking for more Cybernadette sessions. Sessions which correspond perfectly to the needs of practical use, indispensable in our increasingly digital world. Efficient, user-friendly, accessible to all, these are the spontaneous comments at the end of a workshops session.
